About
found THEATRE.
The company began in 2004 on the remote Greek island
of Ikaria, where I had taken three actors to work in a variety of natural
settings; seashore, forest, moonlit mountain top, cave. We created our
first theatre piece, The Fisherman and his Soul from these experiences,
incorporating found objects on a starkly simple set.
A sense of place, actual or imagined, remains central to the work.
To quote from my founding statement, the company aims “to create
the magic of theatre through the engagement of Imagination in both artists
and audience… set ourselves the challenge of creating theatre
from the most basic of resources, believing that, by limiting resources,
we enlarge Imagination…to explore the nature of theatre itself,
starting from the most basic principles -
the physical presence of actor and spectator; the sense and use of ritual
that is the root of all theatre; the need to tell stories – to
be open to the gifts of chance; this is the meaning of “found
theatre”… each moment of performance is to be a new discovery.”
Now based in the heart of Derbyshire’s
Peak District, the company continues to create fresh and innovative
work, often in collaboration with other artists, companies and venues.
Simon Corble, Artistic Director, 2017.
